Barbarian Fury xNudge® doesn’t pull any punches immediately – it’s a 5×4 style game which features 25 paylines. I’d never come across NoLimit City before the last couple of weeks. I tried their game Punk Rocker xWays last week and was very impressed. That game featured several unique and innovative features, so I was excited to be testing out another one of their games.
The intro screen lets you know immediately that there are several interesting features present in this game, including “Fury Spins”, which is a fancy name for a typical free spin round, expanding and nudging wild symbols which appear on reels two, three, and four, and a Barbarian re-spin mode that dramatically increases your chances of winning big during the base game.
For some reason, many sites have the game listed as being a 40 payline slot, but this is incorrect. The reels are full of stacked symbols, including many stacked wilds that come in particularly handy during the free spins feature.
As with Punk Rocker xWays, a worldwide leaderboard is again included, which allows you to compare your results to those of every other player who has tried this game in the past. This feels as if it has been inspired by the achievements and leaderboards used on modern consoles, but works just as well here. It would be great to see this kind of feature become more widely implemented within the industry.
First Impressions – Spinning the Reels for the First Time
Before I even made my first spin, I was immediately impressed with the visual styling of Barbarian Fury xNudge®. The advertised RTP of the game is just a tad over 96%, which is more than acceptable, but also increases further to 96.32% should you stick to using the bonus buy feature only.
The music was very listenable to begin with, although I did find myself switching to my playlist after the first hour. Again, I don’t think that can be used against NoLimit city – any piece of music will quickly become repetitive if you keep it on repeat for long enough.
Barbarian Fury xNudge® Pay table
The pay table can be a little confusing at first glance, in part due to the heavy use of stacked symbols. Some slots such as Big Time Gaming’s Danger! High Voltage only count stacked symbols once, which is probably because that game employs pay ways rather than standard pay lines.
When you hit a stacked symbol in Barbarian Fury xNudge® and it expands to fill the entire reel, it is possible to score a maximum five-of-a-kind win on all 25 paylines simultaneously. If your luck is really in, and you score a stacked multiplier wild on the same spin, you can potentially win up to 8,785x your stake from a single spin.
Although the 8,785x number is promoted as being the maximum possible win that can be collected whilst playing this slot, there is a potential infinitely increasing multiplier enabled during the free spins feature. I suspect that we will eventually see a true monster of a win out of this game, and with no win cap mentioned in the pay table, who knows, perhaps it could even exceed the 100,000x stake wins we have seen posted on YouTube by fans of Dead of Alive 2?!
With the three stacked wild symbols taking up so much space on the reels, it’s uninspiring to learn that there isn’t much space left over for anything else. Thankfully, the stacks are where it’s at in Barbarian Fury. The red warrior pays 100, 12, and 8 coins respectively. The green warrior steps this down to 60/10/6.80, whilst the lowest scoring blue stacks pay 40/8/6.
There is a full set of five royal symbols too – from an Ace right through to a Ten – but there isn’t much between them as far as the payouts go. Add in the wild and scatter symbols, and you have the complete list of the game’s ten symbols.
As we mentioned at the beginning of this review, NoLimit City has included several features in Barbarian Fury xNudge®, and it’s nice to see that they are all significantly different from those which were present in Punk Rocker xWays.
It’s far too easy for slot developers to get lazy these days and opt to simply churn out endless clones of well-established and/or popular games, rather than investing the time, effort, and capital required to create a brand-new machine from scratch. I hope that NoLimit City will not fall into that trap at any time in the future – your current Modus Operandi is already perfect, NoLimit City!
xNudges Roaring Wilds
These symbols appear only on the centre-most three reels. Even if only one of the four individual blocks of the wild symbol can be seen at the end of your spin, these symbols will always nudge into place until they fill the entire reel.
Unlike many other games where multiplier wilds appear only during free spins, Barbarian Fury has the potential to award a maximum multiplier of 12x – even during the base game.
The stacked Barbarian symbols appear on all five reels, and just like the Roaring Wilds, will also nudge repeatedly until they have covered the entire column at the end of each spin. This feature can be triggered both in the base game and during the free spins feature.
There’s nothing particularly “furious” about these spins, but that doesn’t mean they are any less exciting! The number of spins you receive depends on how many scatters you hit and their positions on the screen at the time the bonus triggered.
The minimum I received during testing was ten free spins, whilst the maximum was sixteen. Twenty are theoretically possible, though you’ll need all five scatters in a row along the top of the screen to achieve this. The cost or purchasing the Fury Spins is just 70x your stake, which seemed like a bargain to me. On average, I came out ahead more than four times out of five too – surely just beginners luck, but it made my testing a lot of fun all the same!
